• ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Bronze Award Winner (travel essays)

After decades of hiking some of the world’s greatest trails, Brandon Wilson was excited to hear about the Via Alpina, new paths running through eight countries along the backbone of the Alps. Besides promising immersion into Alpine life, it’d be the ultimate adventure. It meant climbing 3000 feet from valley to mountain hut each day – 1200 miles – for nearly four months.

Faster than you can say “schnitzel,” he coaxed his desk-jockey wife into joining him. Unlike their trek across Tibet, they wouldn’t dodge bullets. Who knew that ice fields, relentless rain, Föhn winds, ticks and cow patties could be more dangerous?

Then again, the weird encounters and bizarre characters would help put peril into perspective. It’s all here, the daily triumphs and agony of de feet, captured in Wilson’s witty, gritty, award-winning style.

Join us for an inspiring, slightly crazed look at the peerless Alps – and at an everyday midlife couple who dare to follow their dream.

Includes author photos, maps and custom illustrations by Ken Plumb.

"This lighthearted hiking narrative reflects the positives of such an experience overcoming hardship, laughing at their inability to find trail blazes, Europe's apparent fear of switchbacks on trails ascending 1000-plus meters per col, and the bond and struggle with your trail partner. Another celebration of simply putting one foot in front of the other with everything you need on your back and faith in the trail ahead.… Recommended for armchair travelers and anyone interested in hiking the Alps." ~ Library Journal

“My favorite kind of adventure tale… I laughed, I winced, and then I started checking to see when I was next scheduled to be anywhere near the Via Alpina.” ~ Kyle Wagner, travel editor, The Denver Post

“Award-winning author Brandon Wilson is a pioneer in a groundbreaking genre of travel writing.” ~ Midwest Book Review

“Wilson brings his considerable intellect and dry sense of humor to this epic adventure and the result is brilliantly accessible and wonderfully subversive.” ~ Richard Bangs, author of Quest for the Sublime, legendary adventurer

"Thanks to Wilson's gritty and often comedic portrayal of events and the characters they come across (like Mr. and Mrs. Mustache and their snails), Over the Top & Back Again suggests that maybe a little madness isn't too crazy after all." ~ Sarah Esterman, WEND Magazine

“Marvelous account… told with a fine eye for detail and a keen sense of humor.” ~ Royal Robbins, rock climbing pioneer

“Wilson’s the king of ‘tell it like it is’ travel writing!” ~ Donna Coomer, Between the Lines Reviews

"Their teamwork, love of the great outdoors and their courage makes this a hi-octane travel adventure story unlike any other I have read. Go buy Brandon's book but I am warning you. Come prepared for a "heart stopping, blood boiling" real life expedition." ~ Neville J. Tencer, Co-Author of An Italian Odyssey One Couple's Culinary & Cultural Pilgrimage

"Brandon Wilson's one-of-a-kind adventure makes you want to grab your walking stick, step into your hiking boots and climb a mountain." ~ Christopher Elliott, syndicated travel writer

“Wilson is my favorite travel writer. …A completely captivating read. Throughout there is a sense of suspense in this wild adventure. This is perfect for armchair travelers as well as those who aspire to hike the same trail.”
~ Rebecca Review, Top 10 Reviewer

“He walks the way Forrest Gump runs. Brandon’s driven to it. As for the connection between the outer journey and the inner journey, he never pushes it. You get it in small bits, as he does, because that's the way it comes. It has a lot to do with savoring the simple pleasures of life that surround us every day. Wilson's books point the way toward this happy state of mind just be bold and endure a few vicissitudes.” ~ Stephen Hartshorne, GoNOMAD.com

Over the Top Back Again Hiking X the Alps eBook Brandon Wilson Ken Plumb Dr Bob Rich

There is nothing quite like trekking 'with' Brandon Wilson and his wife, Cheryl. I treasure each and every book Brandon Wilson has written. He has a very special gift in which he is literally able to transport a reader to the place he is currently walking. This read is very, very special. In many ways, its more personal than the others! He continues to learn and share the art of humility. This time with much more humor.

Just as he wakes up each morning to begin another day, he also takes you! You are not just reading. In [his] world, one you thought you might be able to imagine, he unfolds this enormous, several-countries, trek. He is always immediate, in the now. You are too! At once he so personal and then again through the magic of his writing you step completely INTO his journey. You too have been invited to challenge each and every step! [Its really something, after reading for several hours, to literally look up and find yourself in your own home!]

What I experienced (once again) was how his non-fiction becomes my realty with each page. I could 'feel' the blisters of the up and down, up and down and down and up. I become starved [with him] and oh-so-very-wet from the constant and unforgiving rain. I'm shivering in [his] cold weather, wondering if there is hot food, a warm fire anda I-don't-care-how-hard-it-is-bed .... just let there be one at day's end! Perhaps at the next dawning, you will screech at sun's delight! You hold your breath, wishing it oh oh so to be true! In some ways Brandon's book reads like a thriller!

I could 'see' the Alpine vistas with him. I heard myself laughing aloud when meeting all the different native people. I could smell not only the beauty of alpine air and the majesty of it all, but I could even smell myself from [his] effort! HA! What a delight! 'We' become additional companions, as his readers. What a gift!

Truth is, with each of his books, Brandon makes one remember to be sensitive to even the smallest of Life's treasures. We learn to trust our relationships even more through reading his. And he teaches us to salute the smallest of victories, forgive our mistakes and what it takes to forgive others and move on, no matter what.

After all, as he demonstrates once again through his fine writing style, we are only 'one step' away to our own humanity, as well as oh so close to others.

Over the Top Back Again Hiking X the Alps eBook Brandon Wilson Ken Plumb Dr Bob Rich Reviews

I am planning to trek the Via Alpina this summer and was hoping for an informative well written text. Instead this book is poorly written and seems to consist mainly of complaints. The first 30 pages got so tiresome to read that I decided to skim the rest of the book with an occasional few pages of reading. The writing is colorless in choppy sentences without a style, the descriptions of scenery and experiences are shallow and mostly consist of complaints of one kind or another. At one point the author actually quetsches about how the paths do not go straight but instead meander endlessly up and down, often he cannot find the trek and at no point does he feel like it might have something to do with his own competency. I could not find any useful information about hiking in general and there was hardly anything other than discouragement about the Via Alpina..
All of Brandon's books are entertaining and good reading. I've read them all and have enjoyed every one of them. This one is no exception. You feel like you are right there with him and Cheryl. Do yourself a favor and hike along. You even learn along the way.
If you've ever dreamed of hiking the Alps or just want to experience the sheer joy of reading about it, this book details a long trek on the Via Alpina. Brandon's descriptions come alive and will transport you to a Tyrolean wonderland each turn of the page, as you traverse through 8 different countries! A deep Alpine meditation with robust mountain air, delicious cheeses and rugged adventure. Your cheeks might even turn rosy from following this couple from Hawaii through each chapter of this mountainous path of beauty inside frosty peaks and valleys.Although you will be spared the painful blisters in your hiking boots you'll definitely breathe the exhilaration of the trail! Travel writing at it's zenith!
I read Brandon Wilson's "Over the Top & Back Again Hiking X the Alps" cover-to-cover the same day I bought it. And then re-read some parts of it again the next day. And have been going back to look at the pictures every few days. It's that great an adventure.

The book is extremely satisfying for armchair travelers - taking you over 1,000 miles of the high Alps, through eight European countries (and their culture, people and foods). The story includes enough suspense and bad luck to keep your interest or stir your empathy (e.g., "the agony of de feet"), but not so much that you can't visualize yourself right there with Brandon and his wife Cheryl.

The book is a must-read for anyone considering hiking the Via Alpina themselves. My husband and I have been talking about this trail ever since it was created. Reading "Over the Top & Back Again" was the tipping point - we ARE doing it, starting next summer (hiking a few weeks each summer until we've done it all). And we hope to benefit from some of the author's lessons learned.

Finally, I've used the book as an engaging geography lesson for our 9-year-old grandson. Combining the line drawings of the trail segments with an atlas for orientation, and the photos in the middle of the book to prompt questions, we had a wide-ranging discussion about Europe and the Alps and mountain ecology and rural cultures.

This book will be a repeat item on my gift-giving list for this December holiday season.
A little disappointed in this book. It is mostly about everything that can go wrong when hiking the Via Alpina, with a less-than-successful attempt to make the misfortunes humorous, by two folks (especially one) who obviously weren't really prepared physically for the trek, and who made a bad decision to try and traverse the entire Red Trail in one season, and therefore started too early and hit a lot of bad weather. What is needed is a more current book with a more balanced view. Maybe I'll write it after my trek this summer . . . ?
